With technology advancing so much.... computers are getting old and outdated before you even buy it.. i mean you by a new pc and the next week that pc becomes really old... So many of us would have old pc's at home and would probably want to buy a new pc but wouldn't know what to do with the old one..many would give them to their grandparents because all they do is check mail :D.. lol.. selling a pc now a days isnt worth it AT ALL.. trust me.. now a days computers are so damn cheap to buy.. i mean u can get a computer for like 7k in the market.. so how much u think u would get for an old pc... dont even think about it!!!
so what can you do with an old pc?? the best thing is using it as a home server.. many homes today have more than 2 or 3 pcs ... and having a server which is managing, monitoring and securing all these pc's would be a great thing .. and home servers do not need much of resources you can use your old computer for that.. home servers can be used as a file server to store all your files at one location so you can access it from anywher even from the internet.. you can use it to share your printer between all your pc's at home.. you can use it as a gateway to share internet and have a network firewall installed which makes your pcs way secure ...There are many other uses of a home server.. you could also use it to host your own website i.e. called a web server.. WAMP is a great option for that..
So what OS would you go for??? well some people say linux ,some windows etc etc.. as i mentioned in an earlier post on windows vs linux.. linux is a bit hard to use but its secure its geting earier to use day by day..so it depends on you.. windows xp will do the job and ubuntu can also do the job.. inface most of the OS' can do the job.. because things like file serve, rwebserver, print server and all otherfunctions which i mentioned above can be done with any OS..since these are basic functions and all that your doing is running a home server not any major corporate server.. so dont worry!!!
So give it a shot im sure it will help your home setup.. your data will be more orgranized and more secure.. and getting things done will be a lot easier.. and what more u can also backup data from all your home pcs to your home server.. so there you go another use..there are so many applications of a webserver and you can't posisbly remember them all...But you will soon realize once you start your own home server..so GOOD LUCK!!!

good idea prashant.
I have an idea. In India, there are thousands of Government Primary schools where they don't have even a single PC for 100s of Students. We can donate our old PCs to these schools.
No alone schools, Women Self Help Groups in villages, other charity organisations require PCs.
Why can't we set up a web site where interested people can post their willingness to donate their old PC/ and peripherals
Thanks
