The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has approved a recent proposal of relaxing the domain name rules.Previously the domain names were restricted, i.e. you could only choose .com,.co.uk,.co.in,.net etc. Now there would be no restriction , you could have any domain name you wish. This has definetly given rise to a lot of potential in the expansion of the internet.Very helpful for enterprises and for personal users as well.Though the plan has just been approved. The whole process would come into action only by 2009.Previously .org,.uk etc had limitations wherein only certain organizations or certain countries could use that domain name, now with the new approval, there would be no restrictions whatsoever.
Many individuals could now have any name they wish, with any extension.Even enterprises could have websites for each brand the way they want it.This would increase the number of people on the internet and thereby its potential.ICANN has supposedly invested a lot of money on this. Also registering for these kinds of domains would be a little expensive initially.Though they havent mentioned an approximate value, I'm sure it would be a little high in the beginning. But im sure that wont affect most enterprises and internet enthusiasts. For more info , CLICK HERE to read on!!
