When you are connected via wifi it is always better to disable Roaming Mode in ubuntu.The reason i say this is because if you have multiple networks in your area and you have roaming mode enabled, you would notice that your pc or laptop would automatically connect to some other wifi network , maybe your neighbour's network or anybody else..The reason this happens is because when you have roaming mode enabled(which is done by default in ubuntu) , it chooses the wifi network which has the best signal around and if that wifi has no security like WEP OR WPA , it would connect automatically.
This could be very disturbing at times, especially in office or at home or at places where there are many wifi networks.So its always adviced to turn of Roaming Mode and select your wifi network manually . Here's how you do this :
Step 1 : Go to System->Administration->Network
Step 2 : Select Wireless Connection and Click on Properties
Step 3 : Uncheck "Enable Roaming Mode"
Step 4 : Then Under Wifi settings choose your Network Name(ESSID) which would be the network you want to connect to
Step 5 : Enter the network password if the network has one.

Step 6 : Under Connection Settings, you could set Configuration to "Automatic Configuration(DHCP)" unless you want to specify a static ip.
Step 7 : CLick on OK

Now you should always be connected to your preffered network even if you keep moving around your house or office.

In 8.10 simply install gnome-network-admin from synaptic. And you'll have your old network config gui back.

cheers
