This tutorial should help you improve your sound output in dell laptops in ubuntu. This can also be applied to other brands as well. Just specified Dell because it worked on my dell . When i installed ubuntu on my dell , i first had a very low sound output . I could faintly hear something but it wasnt good enough . So this was something that worked for me :

Note : 1) If you dont have Any sound output whatsoever , then you should try THIS FIRST .
2) Presuming that you've already set everything to maximum , i.e. the speaker icon on the taskbar

Step 1 : Double Click on the Speaker Icon Next to the Clock in the top bar of ubuntu

Step 2 : Ensure that Front Is Set to Maximum . If you dont see Front then you can select it under Preferences .

Step 3 : This is what helped me!! Hope it works for you too!!

Note : Incase you need to know , I've selected Device as HDA INTEL(Alsa mixer) under System->Preferences->Sound
