You might have come across this problem if you have ubuntu on a network!!THe thumbnail feature is a very useful feature if you have a lot of pictures or videos or any other type of media all in one folder . This helps you to find that one picture or video file which you need out of say 100 or 1000 of them. If you didnt have the thumbnail view then you would have had to click on each photo or video and find the one you need therefore having the thumbnail view can save a lot of time and effort. For ubuntu the thumbnail view is enabled for local files but when it comes to access network files which are from another computer via Samba or NFS then you would notice that the thumbnail preview is no longer available . So this short tutorial would help you to Enable thumbnail preview even for network files such as pictures and video files :
Here's a look as to how the files are without thumbnail preview.
SO here's how you enable it :
Step 1 : In the same nautilus window ( if you havent opened one , click on Places->Computer) click on Edit
Step 2 : Then click on Preferences from the dropdown menu
Step 3 : Then go to the Preview Tab
Step 4 : Under "Other Previewable Files" look for Show Thumbnails and set it to "Always" . By default it is "Local files only" , so you need to change that to "Always"
Step 5 : Close the window and now try accessing your network folder which contains media files and you should see the thumbnail preview!!
