Linpopup is a wonderful tiny application for ubuntu which can be used to chat or send messages via LAN to other ubuntu machines . This can be very useful for those who are on networks with no internet and purely LAN. This is a very light application and very easy and simple to use.It doesnt have too many advanced feature and functions its a simple program designed for a simple purpose, which is what makes it so special.So this tutorial should help you setup linpopup to use on your network to send messages to other machines on your network.

You need to install Samba for this , if you dont have it , then CLICK HERE to find out how to install it , if you have it , then proceed

Installing Linpopup ( Do this to all machines you want to use for chatting)

Step 1 : Go to the Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) and type sudo apt-get install linpopup
Step 2 : Now click on YES for adding linpopup to samba's config



Step 3 : Then go to Applications->Internet->Linpopup ( or just type linpopup at the terminal )

Step 4 : You should see a window like this


Step 5 : Then its pretty easy , look at the icons, the first one is to send a message, second one to reply to a message, third one to delete a message

Sending And Receiving a Message

Here i am Trying To Send A message From prash-desktop to prash-laptop (i.e. from my desktop to my laptop )

NOTE: Under Send To you could either use the hostname ( prash-laptop ) or ip address like 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x ( you can find out this information by typing ifconfig in the terminal)

Lan chat without internet can already be done through empathy, pidgin and ekiga--yes even fullscreen video chat.

For companies who cares about security LAN messenger is best choice, all these public IM like skype, yahoo etc. can be hacked easily
