A lot of people using an ADSL connection experience frequent disconnections , this can get very irritating especially when your downloading a large file . There could be many reasons for disconnection , here are a few ways to troubleshoot :

Step 1 : Login to your modem ( http://192.168.1.1) and enter username and password(admin/admin) .
Step 2 : Look for the STATUS page , most routers have that page which gives you information on SNR . Note down these values

Step 3 : If your SNR Is more than 10 its fine , its like OK , but for good performance it should be above 15 . If your SNR Is bad then proceed to next step , if not go to step 6
Step 4 : If your SNR is bad , there could be 2 reasons , either your telephone wiring isnt correct or your splitter is damaged . Remember , your telephone wire entering your house must go directly to the ADSL splitter first ( no telephones should be connected before that ) , all your telephones must be connected after the splitter.

Step 5 : If your wiring is correct , then its mostly a faulty ADSL splitter . There is also a possibility that your telephone line outside the house is damaged , in that case you would need to contact your ISP and request them to change the underground line outside your house.
Step 6 : If your SNR is good and you still face disconnections , check your POWER LED , observe it for a while , if you see that power led blinking , it indicates that your modem/router is faulty , you could either try a firmware upgrade or get it replaced.
Step 7 : If your SNR is good and your POWER LED is not blinking and you still face disconnections , then its mostly an Operating system issue . Check MTU values, DNS servers and for spyware/virus.
