This came as a shocker to me when i was browsing through the IndiaBroadband Forums . The Admin of that forum recorded a voice call which contains a conversation between the tata indicom customer care and him . The voice call clearly shows how Tata Indicom deals with all your personal information like telephone number , house address etc .
According to the admin of that forum , Tata Indicom gives away all your personal information when you provide your email address . Now this absolutely unsafe as anybody could give out this email address and get all personal details of a particular person . The customer care operator is CONFIRMING the details with the customer instead of ASKING the customer . Now this seems to be taking place since more than a year and when the admin had questioned the customer care regarding this policy of theirs they just hang up on you.
This is how the conversation goes according to the admin :
Customer calls up:
Customer service agent : What is your id sir/madam
Customer: My id is abcdefgh@vsnl.net.in
Customer service agent : Thanks for providing the id... Your name is Mr so and so and your telephone number is 123456789 and you are calling from xyz city ( some times they even read out the whole address)
Customer: Yes that correct information.
So as you can see ,just by providing the email address , the person's personal details can be stolen. CLICK HERE to listen to the recorded voice call between the Tata Indicom customer care operator and the Admin of India Broadband Forums
Vodafone too does this Identity check but in a much better fashion , The vodafone identity check goes something like this , which is what all of us ideally want :
Customer calls up :
Customer service agent : may I have your id please..
Customer : My id is blah blah blah
Customer service agent : Can you please confirm your name and telephone number for security reasons
Customer: My name is so and so and my number is blah blah blah.
Customer service agent : Lastly to make sure its the right person I am talking to can you please confirm your postal address?
Customer: Yes my address is so and so.
Customer service agent : Now that we know I am talking to the rightfull owner of thier account ... How can I help you today sir/madam.
So as you can see , here they first ASK you some questions rather than CONFIRMING with you .
FINAL WORDS
I really hope that the Tata Indicom Customer Care realize this and change this policy of theirs . Giving away such personal information is definitely a major concern to every tata indicom customer .
PS: A really good job done by the admin of IndiaBroadband in bringing this issue out. There is a live discussion going on at THIS THREAD for those interested.

Is there any way the customer / client confirm whether the call is from the place / company they are saying it is from? They just say: we are from so ...and so company..in which why should customers respond for any of their queries..
What i mean is if they can verify the details of customer by asking sensitive info then why not the customer ask sensitive information about the company before giving out details... A THOUGHT
good point!! but i wonder how practical it would be as you would be speaking to a difference customer care operator everytime , so specific questions would be difficult to ask
