Its been more than a week since ubuntu released its latest OS called Ubuntu Karmic Koala. I just installed it recently on a spare machine as i dont usually start using a new OS on my main machine until im sure its completely because new operating systems tend to have too many common bugs which can come in the way of day to day tasks.
Ubuntu 9.10 has a very nice and elegant look . There are a few changes in its look although no complete revamped look as such , although it was something that was expected since 9.04 . Firstly i really liked their new logon screen , its very nice and informative , it shows you the username rather than you typing the username and password . There are a lot of other changes as well.
Im sure most of you know that pidgin is no longer a part of ubuntu . Its empathy from now on . There was a lot of debate about it on many forums . Empathy now has support for almost all popular protocols.
Also they have a new set of icons , which i really like!!Something like the vista set of icons , different for music, videos etc making the GUI a lot more attractive..
Ubuntu 9.10 comes with Ubuntu One by default , another very good move encouraging syncing between machines which i think is getting popular these days with people having to work with more than 1 machine..
This version also includes something new called Software Center which can be found under the Applications Menu . This is basically a combination of add/remove application , Computer Janitor etc. It has a very nice and easy to use GUI which can help in package management.
At the same time there are still a lot more common bugs which arent yet fixed .. I've been saying this for the past 3 ubuntu releases i think. THe nautilus + samba bug still exists but its frequency of giving errors has reduced!! . Accessing network folders is still not so smooth!! I havent tested out the full potential of firefox yet . I hope it doesnt crash like usual.
Im hoping that sleep and hibernate functions would work well with the new kernel!!
Still havent been able to test out ubuntu 9.10 performance wise and stability wise . Just hope it works well!!
Here are a few ways you could download ubuntu
1)Direct Download
2)Torrents
All the required links are available HERE . Its better to download via torrent as you would get a much faster speed and it wouldn't overload their servers
