It's been quite a while since ubuntu released their latest version Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx . I've been trying this version on a test machine for a few tasks and i am pretty happy to see some noticeable changes this time but not so happy with certain other features and modifications. So here is more on that :

Ubuntu 10.04 released on the last week of april and many people had a lot of expectations from this version as it was an LTS and there was a lot of talks about this version coming up with a lot of visible changes meaning with respect to the interface.
So starting with the interface , im sure its pretty noticeable , ubuntu has gone with a blackish finish compared to the usual dark brown finish which is not a bad move i feel it is required to bring some change in the default interface and i guess this change is welcome . Also another difference is the windows buttons , ubuntu has gone the MAC way by placing the window buttons ( close , minimize , maximize ) on the left hand corner of the window instead of the right hand corner . This is a big change as initially it would be difficult for you to get used to although if you are more of a keyboard user then it doesn't make much of a difference.

Coming to the features . Ubuntu has added a very interesting tool known as gwibber . This is one tool which connects to your social networking sites like facebook , twitter etc and gives you their updates right on your desktop . You can even update your status from your desktop instead of logging in through your web browser . So for all those who use facebook and other social networking sites often i'm sure would love this feature . Ofcourse like before even empathy is well integrated to the operating system . So right from your chat applications to your social networking accounts , you have access to all of it right from your desktop . The best part of all this is that it is so well designed and its very well blend into the operating system.

Some other changes :

1)No more GIMP - F-spot the default software
2)Rythmbox is the default player with a ubuntu one integration

3)Improvements in the Software Center
4)Ubuntu One improvements - Can now sync with any folder instead of the traditional Ubuntu One Folder.

Conclusion :
On the whole , i personally am pretty disappointed with this release of ubuntu . Although yes there are a lot of GUI changes , i still would prefer the previous version . I do like the gwibber add on , but i guess thats something that can be installed in your current version of ubuntu as well. BUt considering it is an LTS , it would definitely give you Long term support :)

u say u are dissappointed without any reason. what is the reason.is it that there are not any great leaps from the previous versions?

i just installed it a few days back for ROS(robot operating system) project. and it looks pretty same as the ubuntu 7 version that i used last year. though i do like the usb format option that appears when u right click a usb drive. but the transfer speeds for usb is very low when compared to windows.

if you read carefully , you will see the reason in the next 2 lines :) ..yep.. exactly... apart from the fact that there are the few GUI changes which not everybody would be interested , it is just the few tools like gwibber etc that makes the difference which can be installed in earlier ubuntu versions..
I'd rather stick with a more stable version that upgrade to the new version at this point of time..
Yes the format option is pretty good..
I installed this version one time before and after an update , i for some reason couldn't boot into ubuntu again.. so i had to reinstall it..what im trying to say is , this is a version which i guess people could migrate to later on when it gets a little more stable. it has a few minor improvements but lacks stability..

I am not one to bash every new release that comes out as the worst ever but Lucid has problems that should have been addressed. These are not minor issues but problems that will prevent people from using Ubuntu and Linux in general. Two of these problems are going to be deal killers for new people. 1. ATI cards that are not supported and 2. Grub2 bugs that cause Grub to stop working. I have a ATI 5750 card and cannot even install Lucid. After I select "try without installing" from the live CD all I get is a blinking cursor on a black screen. I tried the alternate cd and it installed but will not load. Installing the proprietary drivers does not help. Sure there are ways to get this to work but why should I have to spend days searching the forums etc just to install Lucid? I had to go back to 9.10. Yes, one can blame ATI (and they certainly deserve some blame) but Fedora seems to work OK. Also, Grub 2 has major issues and stops working with certain motherboards. For some reason it looks for a floppy and when it can't find it gives you an error " f0d cannot find value for C/H/S. This is a known bug. I have to boot using grub from a cd. Apparently if you use a usb drive you will also experience problems. I am an experienced user so I can work around these, but new users will not bother. How can a major distro such as Ubuntu release something with major issues such as these?

well.. ubuntu is open source.. developed by a community.. there are loads of different kinds of hardware , unfortunately things like this do happen.. It is difficult on their part as well. Things will surely improve and the bugs will get resolved in a few months hopefully..so hang in there :)
