This tutorial will help you configure PPOE mode in UT300R2U as well as WA3002G4.These steps can also be followed for other modems also.. basic principles like changing to PPOE and editing the 0/35 vpi/vci (for bsnl) remains the same.PPOE mode has its own advantages. It makes life simple, all you need to do is switch on your modem and voila you have your internet on already..No need to do any dialing whatsoever..Also it has an added security , it blocks traffic and does not allow all traffic to flow to your computer. THats where port forwarding is used to enable traffic to certain pcs on certain ports. So here goes:
Step 1:Login to your router's menu by going to http://192.168.1.1 and enter admin as username and password

Step 2:You will see a page similar to this

Step 3:Now go to Advanced Setup->WAN and click on the EDIT button under VPI/VCI 0/35 (normally the first option) .

NOTE:For other modems the EDIT button could be in the form of a pencil icon or a notepad icon
NOTE:VPI/VCI 0/35 is for bsnl only. for MTNL it is 0/32 . It varies from ISP to ISP

Step 4:Now you will see a page similar to this.Make sure settings are like as shown in the screenshot and click on Next

Step 5:Here you have to make sure that you SELECT PPOE MODE as shown in the screenshot.Select the radio buttton next to PPOE MODE and click on NEXT

Step 6:I guess the screenshot explains it all.. Enter you ISP(bsnl) username and password in the PPP username and password field(as indicated in the screenshot).Leave all other settings as shown in the screenshot.

Step 7:CLick on NEXT and then save/reboot your router and thats about it.No more dialing required. You can confidently delete the Dialer icon from your Desktop :D

Mr.Prashanth
can u tell me how to setup a dataone WA3002G4 modem so that we can connect to the internet without a username and password.
what i want is to connect to the internet just like other broadbands like sify etc which donot require a username and password.

thank you

mithilesh

hi mithilesh,
Unfortunately i do not have access to the WA3002G4 modem , so i wont be able to post screenshots. But the way of doing it is the same.Just like how the tutorial shows. The difference is in the menu option.I think you should find something called "Interface Setup".Click on that and then go to "Internet" . Set Encapsulation as PPOE/PPOA.And then follow this tutorial.

hi Prashanth,

I had setup my UT300r2u in the way you explain but still i can't connect to internet and even internet lights is also off. (ADSL light is on).

Actually i had reset my modem by mistake and now i don't know how to re-configure it.

Apart fron this setting do we have to change any other setting.

Waiting for your replay.

If the Internet Light isnt glowing then it could be a problem with your telephone line, you would have to contact your ISP for that.

Hi Bro,
Nice tutorial. am a lil scared to do the same with my today installed ZTE DSL 831B modem

Can you help me out with that

Anonymous said... @ June 14, 2008 at 5:31 PM

hey,
steps are pretty same mate.. just login to your router, go to the WAN page, edit vpi/vci 0/35 to ppoe mode.Enter bsnl username and password - the same thing which is given to you by bsnl- the one you use for the dialer.Thats it, just save/reboot your router and you should be done.
Try it out, incase you are stuck somewhere, let me know!!

hi guys for last few days my bsnl internet goes on and off every few mintues. it goes off and comes back on dunno the exact reason. i have ut300r2u modem i have been using it quite extensively like 8-9 hrs and more some days...what could be the reason behind this

Anonymous said... @ July 28, 2008 at 3:55 AM

Ensure that all your telephones are connected after the DSL splitter.. this could reduce the disconnections..

sudeep said... @ August 21, 2008 at 2:16 PM

I have WA3002G4 BSNL modem, i tried the steps you had given to configure the modem for automatic connection (without dialing) but it is not able to connect. but after creating a dialup icon and after i click on connect tab then only it is connecting. but i have to try a lot to connect say half an hour to a hour because it always says line is busy and line is busy. please tell me how can I readily connect to the internet. please

Anonymous said... @ August 22, 2008 at 9:06 AM

hello sudeep,
well steps are same and it should be working.. if you are getting "line is busy" error frequently during bridged mode, then you may have a line problem and should get your line checked..ensure that all your telephones are connected after the splitter.see to that , that your SNR is above 10( you should find your SNR details in your modem's status or homepage http://192.168.1.1) .If you have more than 1 pc at home then you cannot use bridged mode..then while trying to connect from many pcs you would get the "line is busy" error.

Hi...my name is Rohit. I hv ZTE Corp's zxdsl 831aii modem with usb.
It works fine with XP, bt in ubuntu it is not working. When I put sudo pppoeconf it says no ethernet interface/device found. What should I do. When I saw ZTE's CD there were only windows drivers .and I googled a lot for such driver for linux bt not a single link I got. Can ne one lead me...???

Anonymous said... @ September 9, 2008 at 9:02 AM

hello rohit,
Doesnt your modem come with a LAN port, if so then its better you use that port. Also posting an ifconfig output could help.It is very difficult to get usb drivers for this device.I remember testing out a ut300r2u modem via usb, it worked perfectly without any drivers.I feel that your modem should have a LAN port.if your pc doesnt have one, you might need to purchase one , you should be able to get one for around 150rs

If you want to use ppoe mode(automatic dialing).. then you dont need to use the dialer in vista.. just follow this tutorial and you should be able to access internet automatically

Hi Prashanth,

I have BSNL broadband connection. I am trying to setup the linksys router (WRT54G). For this, I am first trying to setup PPPoE for the broadband.

When I am trying to go to http://192.168.1.1, I get "page cannot be displayed". Hence I am not able to go fwd and set PPPoE connection.

Could you suggest me what to do.

Anonymous said... @ November 25, 2008 at 3:47 AM

hello Dinakar,
It seems you arent able to access your modem..Connect your dsl modem directly to your computer ( forget the wifi router for the time being ensure that you setup your dsl modem first). Then follow this tutorial incase you arent able to access http://192.168.1.1 -http://prash-babu.blogspot.com/2008/09/internet-works-on-one-pc-but-not-on.html .Now you should be able to access your dsl router. Now ensure the following 2 in your dsl modem
1)PPoe Mode - follow this tutorial for that
2)Enable DHCP - http://prash-babu.blogspot.com/2008/04/how-to-enable-dhcp-in-your-modem-or.html

This is good enough for your router. Now connect your wifi router to your pc and change its ip address to 192.168.1.100 .. And ensure dhcp is DISABLED In your wifi router. Now connect one LAN cable from dsl router to LAN port of the wifi router( note : LAN port not WAN port, the WAN port is a bit separate from the LAN ports) . Restart all devices and you should have things working.
I have always been wanting to make a tutorial on connecting an ADSL router with a wifi router.I will do it as soon as possible..
Hope this helps,
Prash

Hi Prashanth,

Thanks a lot. I will try and will get back to you.

Btw, I have prepared a 'how to' document with screen shots to connect linksys router wrt54G to bsnl model which i would i like to share with you so that you could post the same on this blog which wud be helpful for many.
but before that, i wud like you to go thru that and check everything is perfect in that document.
can i have ur email id so that I could send the document.

thanks

Anonymous said... @ November 25, 2008 at 7:14 AM

hey dinakar,
You can send it to superprash2003@gmail.com . Surely will read it and post it here so that it would be helpful for people who need it.This tutorial is in very high demand, trust me, i havent found a good one on the internet either, unfortunately its a long procedure so it takes time to create the tutorial and i've just not been able to start with it.So you providing the tutorial would definetly help a lot.As now a days almost every broadband subscriber has the typical ISP router + wifi router setup. And frankly speaking its not that simple for a newbie to setup. So a detailed tutorial with screenshots would be very useful. Thanks for your inputs.

Hello Prash Babu,
I am having a trouble with my new broadband connection from BSNL with HOME 500 plan. The problem is that, "i cant get enough browsing + downloading speed with this plan". While browsing i just get 211 kbps and during download (even a software from Microsoft site) i just get 26 Kbps speed. BSNL's site "dataone.in" also shows these low speed. So i call the technicians for this matter but they even cant diagnose it and left (blemming on my low PC RAM=256MB). So i deside to solve it by my self. I tried two to three days on net but cant get accurate and proper results. Hope you will guide the right way.....Thank you SIR.

Anonymous said... @ December 11, 2008 at 2:27 AM

hello mr right,
Please be a little more specific with your speeds.. i presume you mean that when you download a file from a website you get 26kbps ? but when you go to say speedtest.net then you get a speed of 211kbps? ..
Do you get frequent disconnections in your internet connection?? login to your modem http://192.168.1.1 and post your SNR status. Update your antivirus and antispyware and do a full system scan..

Hi,
I was trying to configure THOMSON SPEEDTOUCH 585V6 Modem which i got from Australia is not working with Airtel ISP.

On the modem home page first click on Broadband connection and under that go for Internet Services now click View More.

and enter username and password, provided by Airtel and press connect button for 10 sec internet light is become RED then off.

and hence unable to connect internet.

Help to fix it.

thanks

Mr. Prashanth
Thank you for your quick suggetion but let me tell you my PC has Avast Antivirus Home Edition & i update it very next day and i just scaned it yesterday so there is no virus or threat found.

And about i want to know you that my browsing speed is 211 kbps and the downloading speed is 26 kbps.

And with the BSNL Home 500 plan these limits are really very low.

Anonymous said... @ December 11, 2008 at 10:39 PM

Your Current Bandwidth Reading: 205.80kbps
(Download Rate at 25.73 KB/sec)

This test digit is reported from "dataone.in" just now.

Anonymous said... @ December 12, 2008 at 3:21 AM

@Anonymous
It seems that you are getting connected but immediately getting disconnected.. presuming that you have followed the tutorial properly and ensured that you set vpi/vci 1/32 to ppoe mode and other vpi/vci to bridged mode..
Go to the STATUS page of your router, it would mention SNR values.Do post your SNR values here .. this should help http://prash-babu.blogspot.com/2008/12/how-to-prevent-frequent-disconnections.html

@mr right
Please do a speedtest at www.speedtest.net .. bsnl speedtest is not at all accurate..you didnt answer if you experience frequent disconnections.. Is 26kbps download speed for direct downloads or torrents??

Anonymous said... @ December 12, 2008 at 9:39 AM

No Mr Prashanth, there is not frequently disconnection but my direct downloading speed is two low as 26 kbps. It is not the torrent downloading speed ok. And following are the result from speedtest.net-----

Last Test Date: 12/12/2008
Total Tests Taken: 1
Fastest Download: 214 kb/s
Fastest Upload: 101 kb/s
Average Download: 214 kb/s

I was thinking the same thing (i mean to connect my modem with another computer) but i have no spare laptop from my friends or somebody, but i will try it somehow last.

N thanx for such a quicker reply.

YOur SNR is perfect.. never seen something as high as 40.. awesome.. its mostly an issue with your pc.. if you could try with another PC .. or even dual boot another OS and check.. it would be great..

Mr Prashanth believe me my PC is working extreamly good. It has 2.66GHz P4 processor and has AVG Antivirus installed. I scaned it just yesterday & it has no virus detected. BSNL technicians blaim on low RAM of my PC (it is 256 MB). Can it be the reason for low downloading speed? This is just to know you, that i just install the Windows professional today (with a complete new installation). But still there is not such a good speed. It is,...

211 kbps for browsing,
25 kbps for downloading &
10-15 for torrent downloading.

These speeds are not recomanded with the Home 500 plan.

Atlast, thank you for your quick suggetion.

And there are two SNR Margines in the report

Local SNRMargin 40.0 dB
Local Line Attn 17.0 dB

Remote SNRMargin 10.0 dB
Remote Line Attn 8.0 dB

did you notice that?

your right 10 is pretty low for SNR.. try this.. disconnect all telephones temporarily at home.. just remove the telephone lines from the telephone.. then restart modem.. and look at SNR and see if it has improved.. then try downloadin ga file.. if its still slow , post the link of the file you are trying to download..
you need to ensure that all your telephones are after the splitter.

the link is below:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=9AE91EBE-3385-447C-8A30-081805B2F90B&displaylang=en

now try downloading IE7 and compare the download speed with mine.

Mine download speed is 25.6 kbps.

This just to know you i just have scanned my whole computer with Norton Antivirus 2009 (with latest updates). So i can surely say that my pc is healthy. Am i right?

And do what ever you said (accept try another pc) but, it couldn't make any change with the download speed.

BSNL technicians blaim on low RAM of my PC (it is 256 MB). Can it be the reason for low downloading speed?

Lastly i want to thank you so much for your quick guidance. cause its like face to face. THANK YOU..........MR. PRASHANTH.

@Mr Right
well im getting low speed from that site as well.. So try some other link . Best thing to do is download Ubuntu , and try out the live cd . www.ubuntu.com .. you dont have to install ubuntu . Just run the live cd it wont have any effect on your computer . Then when ubuntu loads using the live cd . open firefox and try downloading something and then note down the speed..well RAM shouldnt be an issue unless your windows responds very slowly or you experience some lag...

@Anonymous
connect one LAN cable from LAN port of modem to LAN port of switch . ENsure that DHCP is on in the bsnl modem .. and also ensure you are on PPoE mode.. i.e. follow this article to be on ppoe mode

Hi,
I have a ut300r2u modem with a bsnl broadband connection. I'm facing a problem with sharing the internet connection between two computer that I have connected with the help of a switch.
What should I do? please help!

Prash Babu said... @ December 1, 2009 at 7:41 AM

have you configured it in pppoe mode as shown in this tutorial?does the internet work as soon as you switch on your modem? do you use a dialer in windows?

Ashwin said... @ December 5, 2009 at 7:45 AM

It used to work properly until I reset the modem to the factory settings.
Usually as soon as I started any one of my two systems the net connection would be available at both the ends. Now I have to feed the user-name and password everytime and even after that it just works on one system at a time. Yes I did the pppoe settings. I knew last time for configuring the modem/router I did something different as used these pppoe settings a lot later. What should I do?

Prash Babu said... @ December 9, 2009 at 1:28 AM

i still think you have configured your modem incorrectly otherwise you wouldnt be able to use the dialer in windows.. recheck the WAN pages of your router..

Ashwin said... @ December 16, 2009 at 12:05 AM

k got it..
don't know if my router thinks that I'm dumb. Did the same settings thrice today and it worked. Maybe I was doing something incorrectly. Thanks alot buddy.

Please reply for the above two posts

Prash Babu said... @ March 24, 2010 at 8:32 AM

your SNR downstream is 7.1 which is very low.. you should get your line checked.. make sure all phones are after splitter.. try disconnecting all telephones temporarily and then reboot modem and see if SNR improves..

Phone line busy? Thats usually an error for dial up connections. Could you post a screenshot of your error message?

Hi Prash Babu,

I have a UTStarcom WA3002G4 modem. BSNL have configured this as Automatic dialer mode. I need to turn on my wirelss now but I am not able to access my router using http://192.168.1.1
Also, I am not able to connect other computer/laptop to other ethernet interfaces on the router. They simply don't come up.

On my desktop, there is a ppp adapter broadband connection with default gateway 218.248.255.139
and an ethernet adapter with no default gateway!

Hence I am not sure of what needs to be done. Could you please help me with this one?

Mr.Prashanth,
I have tried your above mentioned guide to configure my modem, it's not working. My modem is working well in bridge mode. I want it to be in PPPoe mode. Earlier it was working fine in PPPoe mode. This was brought to the notice of BSNL personal, they to failed to configure the modem in PPPoe mode. They simply replied, your modem is faulty, if so how come its working well in bridge mode.

Prashanth,

You have explained very nicely and practically how to setup things. However the screenshots are hardly visible and we cannot make out what the values are in the screen shots. Since you refer to them in your explanations, it makes it hard.

Please replace the screenshots with readable ones and I am pretty sure lot of readers would appreciate it.

Regards,
Venkat

I have BSNL supplied UT300R2U Type 1 modem. I tried to upgrade the firmware but it was failed. Now my modem became inaccessible. Its RJ45 Ethernet LED constantly blinks. I also tried to ping to 192.168.1.1 but it was failed. How to recover from this problem.
