AVG 8.0

Finally got a chance to review AVG.Always wanted to so here goes...AVG released its 8.0 final version few weeks back and as i mentioned earlier in another post , this release has some really major improvements!!To download CLICK HERE.

1)New Graphical User Interface
AVG has done a complete makeover on their interface, nothing is the same.Its totally different and a lot more bright and interactive.I think this new avatar is simply superb compared to their previous versions i think its a really good idea to have a new LOOK.The new look is pretty good very bright and very different.Although i didnt like one part which is there is no "SCAN NOW" button as such.To scan for viruses one must go to tools->Scan computer . I felt it would have been much better to have a SCAN NOW button in the main page itself.Most of the AVG options are from the drop down menus so if you are used to the old avg interface you might take some time to find what you want.But once you get used to it, i'm sure you'll like it!!

2)Built in Antispyware
I think this is one of the best ideas.Now a days anti spywares have become as important as antiviruses.So integrating both the antispyware and the antivirus into one package is totally cool.You dont need to scan for viruses and spyware seperately which is good because their previous FREE versions had an antivirus and a anti spyware seperatel, so having this all in one package is simply superb.

3)Email Scanner
This was present in the earlier versions also.Its pretty much the same!!

4)LINK SCANNER
Well this is put in caps because i just love this.I feel this is the best improvement i found in the new avg.It's a wonderful idea, with the increase in the number of vulnerable sites on the internet this is a must i feel!!The link scanner basically alerts you just before you visit a website whether the website is safe to browse or not!!Many websites have a lot of dangerous code present in it which starts affecting your computer as soon as you visit that website, that way this link scanner will tell you in advance before you visit the site whether it is a clean website or not.This presently works with Google,yahoo and msn search.Being a new feature i had tested it out and the results were positive.AVG was able to successfully alert me in the google search results page itself.


5)Software size and memory usage
Well as said earlier this version comes with loads of new stuff but it has one more new thing as well.The SIZE.Previous AVG versions were only approx 20mb in size whereas this new version of avg is more than 40mb which is double its previous size.Also in terms of memory usage it does use quite a lot of memory.I think its quite obvious considering that it comes with a built in antispyware and link scanner and its improved GUI etc.
But i dont think it affects the system performance on the whole.I dont find any difference personally speaking.

Final Verdict : All in All i just love the new avg 8.0 right from its looks to its features and not to miss the LINK SCANNER.I dont think you need to worry about its memory usage as such!!I hope all these features come to some good use and make our internet experience a lot more safer and a lot more FUN!!!
