Now a days the usage of laptops and other wifi enabled devices have increased drastically. So the usage of wifi and wifi routers is increasing. Here's a small how to on how to configure wireless connectivity in your wireless router. For this guide i will be using the Netgear WGT624.You can follow these steps for whichever wifi router you have. The steps are similar , all you need to do is reach the wireless settings tab, it should be easy to find.
Configuring wireless is pretty easy.Theres only one major decision which you may need to make i.e. regarding which security encryption you would like to go with.I would say WPA definetly.WPA seems to be the most secure compared to WEP.Simple reason being that WEP *CAN* be cracked by certain softwares.BUT incase you are running certain old computers and you happened to have windows xp without any service packs installed then you might have to go with WEP because windows xp without service pack 2 does not support WPA.But i definetly recommend WPA so try using it if possible.I will give you steps on how to configure your wifi router in both ways

CONFIGURING WIFI ROUTER USING WPA MODE

Step 1: Go to your wifi router's configuration page, by default it is http://192.168.0.1 .Enter admin/admin as username and password.Other common username/password are admin/password , admin/(blank) ,(blank)/admin

Step 2: Now you would enter into the modem's default home page which would look something like this

Step 3:Now go to Wireless Settings(its found on the left hand side tab in this router). It varies from router to router.. but you should find some option named "Wireless" for sure..

Step 4:Now you should see a page similar to this.Be glad as you have done most of the work by now..Configuring is easy.
1)Network Name(SSID) - This will be your wifi network name. You can name it anything from your name to your dog's name.. ANYTHING.It would be listed when you search for wifi networks from your laptop
2)Channel:Channels 1,6 and 11 are recommended.Less interference in these channels so better speeds and range..
3)Mode : G and B for sure..
4)Security Options: Select WPA-PSK in this case.
5)Security Encryption(Passphrase):This is like a password.Actually this is a password for your wifi network.Enter a strong key here. You will be asked to enter the same key while connecting to your wifi network.

Step 5:Click on Apply and restart your router.. for settings to take effect

CONFIGURING WIFI ROUTER USING WEP MODE

4)Security Options: Select WEP in this case.
5)Authentication Type : Leave this to automatic
6)Security Encryption:This is like a password.Actually this is a password for your wifi network.Enter a strong key here. You will be asked to enter the same key while connecting to your wifi network.

Step 5:Click on Apply and restart your router.. for settings to take effect

Hello,
I am very impressed by the simplicity of your posts on seemingly complicated issues.
I am trying to replace my current linksys router with Netgear JNR 1010 router and whenever I type the above mentioned IP address, it takes me to the BSNL page instead of the NETGEAR page. Is there a solution to it? Thanks!
