Protecting Your Wifi Network is one of the most important things to do especially now a days. With more and more people getting Internet connections and with the increasing number of laptops and wifi devices, wifi networks are almost everywhere and nobody cares to even secure it.For beginners, wireless routers which connect you to the internet has an option wherein laptops, mobile phones etc can access the internet, this is called a wifi network. Now for laptops to connect to the router wirelessly, all they need to do is click on your wifi router which would be displayed by default from the list of available wireless networks around that area.By default wifi networks are not secure, when i say this i mean that anybody on the road with a laptop can see your wireless router and connect to it and use your internet for the wrong things. Now you wouldnt want that, for this you need to secure your wireless router by adding a password so that when people try to access your wireless router, they need to enter a password.Almost every place you go in a city , you would find multiple open wifi networks, anybody can join this network and not only cause damage to the current network but also misuse that connection by downloading illegal stuff, Hacking websites etc. The recent blasts in delhi, ahmedabad etc had terror emails linked with it.The email was supposedly sent from an UNSECURE wifi network in mumbai.Even hackers are using this medium too.
Im sure you wouldnt want the police or the CBI to come to your place and question you regarding all this. You could land up in big trouble.Im not scaring you , just trying to help.As what they do is basically get into your wifi network and send an email. So when they trace the email it points out to your ip address which aint pleasent!!So securing your wifi network is VERY important. It isnt tough at all to do so.Most wifi routers come by default with wifi enabled and no security key.So without you even knowing , you have an open wifi network unless you bother to secure it yourself.
The general way of protecting your wifi network is given below

Step 1 : Go to http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1
Step 2 : Enter username/password as admin/admin or admin/password or (blank)/admin or (blank)/password or admin/(blank)
Step 3 : You should see a WIRELESS option somewhere, either WIRELESS OR WIFI OR WLAN.
Step 4 : Look for a security option like WEP OR WPA(Preferred).
Step 5 : Enter a security key which is like a password for your network.
Step 6 : Save/Reboot your network

Stay safe and be secure.Security is of utmost importance.Although its sad to know that not many people even care. Some dont even know. Its always good to educate people regarding this.Rather than having unwanted people misusing it.Below i have posted screenshots of the Wifi option in some routers. You could also find information on securing your router model on the internet. Its just a google search away.If you still have problems, i'll be more than willing to help.
