Gedit is the default text editor for GNOME in ubuntu. It is a very light weight application, very similar to notepad in windows. For those of you who use it , you know what im talking about.I use gedit extensively for various purposes and sometimes i may forget to save the document or gedit could also crash sometimes, in such cases AutoSave is a life saver. As the name suggests the autosave feature saves the open edited documents in gedit every few minutes or every minute if you like automatically. This feature is not enabled by default. So here's how you enable it :
Step 1 : Go to the Terminal(Applications->Accesories->Terminal) and type gconf-editor
Step 2 : Now the Configuration Editor window should pop up.

Step 3 : Now go to /apps/gedit-2/preferences/editor/save and ensure that auto_save is checked. Then you can set the AutoSave interval time . As you can see in the screenshot below i have set it to 1 which means 1 minute. Therefore gedit autosaves all open documents every minute.

Step 4 : Close the configuration editor and restart gedit and you should find the autosave feature working.
