This small tutorial would help you drastically improve your system performance . A lot of people always keep saying that their system is slowing down and it takes a lot of time to boot up and it also responds slowly at times . Well one common thing i've noticed with all these people is that they load their computer with TOOOOOOOOOOO much software . SOme of them they barely use , some of them they didnt even know was on their computer . It's always good to have the basic minimal software installed in your pc so that it runs quickly and responds fast . Now one of the most simple and effective ways to improve your system performance apart from removing junk software is by using the msconfig tool in windows to uncheck certain programs which need not startup when windows starts up. So here's a small tutorial on this :

What happens in most cases is that most of the applications that you install , be it winamp, yahoo messenger,quicktime ,adobe etc etc etc All of them if you notice get launched automatically as soon as your computer boots . Im sure you'd notice the quicktime icon in the taskbar or even yahoo messenger popping up when windows loads . Now all of this and many more programs are launched when windows starts up . Now you definetly dont need all of these programs to startup when windows starts up . You could launch them separately when you need to use them . So by allowing the programs to startup when windows starts up , you are slowing down your system as you have loads of softwares running at the background when you are not even using them . So the best thing to do is to tell windows not to launch these programs automatically when your system starts . SO that way you have a lot of free RAM and CPU resources to use . So here's how you do it :

Step 1 : Click on Start and click on RUN ( or just press the windows symbol + R )

Step 2 : Then type msconfig in the run box

Step 3 : You would now see a page similar to this

Step 4 : Now click on STARTUP
Step 5 : Now you should see a window similar to this , with loads of softwares which have tick mark to the left . This big list of softwares are the softwares which startup automatically when windows starts up

Step 6 : Now uncheck those softwares or applications which you dont need . For example : In the screenshot above i can uncheck winamp , quicktime , MSN messenger etc because i dont need them at startup . Dont get scared that you would screw up your system if you uncheck something important , incase something is not working after you unchecked some software, then just put the tick mark again the next time you boot .
Step 7 : Services like your antivirus software ( avg in this screenshot), any other drivers ( like asus drivers) etc should be left ticked as it is required for them to load at startup. Frankly speaking even if you uncheck all boxes and restart nothing will happen , your system would boot fine , infact it would boot real quick . So dont worry if you uncheck the wrong application , you could always tick it back the next time you boot.
Step 8 : Once your done unchecking the unwanted softwares . Click on Apply and Click on Close
Step 9 : You would then get an option to Restart Now Or Later . Thats your choice actually , but changes will take effect only after you restart.
Step 10 : Once rebooted , I'm sure it would make your system a lot lighter and a Lot more efficient!!

Hello prash-babu,

Nice article.I do follow u r blog. Seems u r busy these days!! One suggestion. Instead of all this pain one can use "ccleaner" one of the best freeware used to clean the crap of the system, maintain registry and startup programs. There is a option to delete completely or just disable the startup programs. For newbies i suggest it would be a gr8 idea than using msconfig.

Download ccleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/

hello sree,
Good suggestion , ccleaner does remove a lot of junk . But does it allow you to disable/enable software at startup. I have used it long time back but at that time it didn't have that functionality.

Hello Prash babu,
Good article again, of course. But I am writing to discuss about ccleaner. Even I had used it long time back and did find it useful in getting rid of a lot of "trash" but there was a problem : ccleaner also removed some temporary files which were necessary for some other software. I had to reinstall software such as Bluej and some others also i guess. So, I think it should be better to code a PC-specific batch file or something equivalent to that so we can run it anytime to clean up folders we know contain only "trash". And of course, the disabling of unnecessary services from services.msc and startup processes and services from msconfig goes with it.

Awaiting your comments and looking forward to more from you,
Adarsh.

Hello Adarsh,
Absolutely right.. But it would be difficult for most users to create a script based on their needs . Disabling services is a very good suggestion but again something for people who know what they are disabling . Disabling programs from starting up may not affect much. But disabling certain critical services can affect system performance . SO you can disable services only if you know what you are disabling :).
Regarding removal of temp files in cclearner , i think there is an option to uncheck certain files which you dont want to remove . This is getting very interesting , i'll try to write more on ccleaner soon :).

I have been doing this for years. Every client I setup I turn off ALL the starups except for the firewall and virus scan - and maybe remote pc. I did a setup of 200pc's recently with XP and I did this on all of them. They run faster, have fewer problems and long term - they are easier to take care of.

@prash

Yes the latest version is more bug free stable and have more options. During cleaning also one can select what folders or types of some files to be cleaned. The new version comes with the ability to disable startup programs.

@Adarsh
I am not sure what happened in your case and what exact software you used but i can assure from my side that it never deletes a file which is useful. Most of the files stored in "temp" are for temporary use only so whats the point it to be stored. And to my knowledge ccleaner never damages any program to such an extent.

Just try this time various builds like slim or portable version.
Get latest version of slim and portable version from here http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds

Some DVD players recognize avi files directly.. so if you burn it normally as a data disc it would work.. but incase your dvd player doesnt support that.. then you can use NERO and burn a video disc.
