Skype as you all know is one of the most used service for voice and video calls . It performs exceptionally well and i really like skype for its great sound and video quality . I mean you could have a very good video call even with a 256kbps internet connection . Setting up skype in windows is usually pretty easy skype automatically detects the sound devices and everything usually works the first time . But when it comes to ubuntu some of you may have problems in getting the audio to work in skype . Usually the software is installed correctly and to an extent even with webcam is detected successfully but sound seems to always come in the way . So this tutorial will show you how i got sound in and sound out to work in skype in ubuntu :
The basic thing you need to do to get it to work is trial and error , frankly speaking thats just got to work . For all the people i've assisted in setting up skype , trying all the various possible combinations of sound in and sound out really worked . You need to try various combinations with the skype audio settings and your ubuntu sound settings . Its always better to first just try all the available options you have in skype for sound in and/or sound out . If that doesnt work then try each sound setting of skype with each sound setting of ubuntu.
The skype sound settings can be found at Options->Sound Devices . NOTE: You get the options menu when you right click on the Skype icon.
The Ubuntu sound settings can be found at System->Preferences->Sound
WHICH SETTINGS WORKED FOR ME?
I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop and the settings shown in the screenshots above are the ones which worked for me , So if you have a dell inspiron or any other dell machine try using the same settings as i have used, who knows it may work!!.
WHICH OPTIONS DO I HAVE TO MEDDLE WITH?
IF YOUR MICROPHONE IS NOT WORKING
In this case you would have to meddle with the SOUND IN for skype sound settings and SOUND CAPTURE for Ubuntu sound settings
IF YOUR SPEAKERS ARE NOT WORKING
In this case you would have to meddle with the SOUND OUT for skype sound settings and SOUND PLAYBACK for Ubuntu sound settings
Hope this helps:)
