Mobile phones in India would soon have 11 digits. Currently all mobile phone numbers in India have 10 digits. The reason for this change is because the approximate base limit of 10 digit numbers is 450 million subscribers, which is likely to get exhausted as soon as by early next year.

So prepare to remember one more digit . Not a big task , is it?? 9 is most probably going to be the digit which will be prefixed to every Indian mobile phone number . Mobile phones in India are in huge demand . This was something that was not expected 4 to 5 years back . But the increase in demand for mobile phones as they become more affordable for the common man is the cause for this change .

How does just adding 9 to every Indian mobile number increases the available numbers?

Good Point. It is still unclear . 9 will probably be added either before the 10 digits or after the 5th digit . i.e. between operator code and mobile no.

A horrible insight! steps are taken only to create chaos among the 390+ million users. Stop reseving 92,93 & 94 codes for the heavy weights. also, cancel mobile numbers wich are not used for more than 6 months. You will get far more numbers than what will be required in next 5 years. And for future use "8" for all CDMA numbers in the country. More than 26% of our populaion lives Below Poverty Live and another 40% in villages. how can't we make proper usage of the existing numbering scheme??? Mobile Operators union is extremely unhapy with the move and so are the common people. Just think before you Act.
