Having too many icons in your desktop can get very irritating . Especially if they are icons which you dont use much . Ubuntu has this feature enabled by default where all removable drives like cd/dvd drives,hard disks,pen drives etc get automatically mounted and placed as an icon in your desktop. Even samba shares or other network folders get automatically mounted in your desktop even if you just access it once . This can get very irritating and can fill up your desktop . So here's how you can get rid of this :

Step 1 : Press ALT+ F2 to open the run Dialog and type gconf-editor and click on Run

Step 2 : You should see a page similar to this

Step 3 : Go to Apps->Nautilus->Desktop
Step 4 : Now uncheck volumes_visible.

Step 5 : Now close all windows and your done!!
