I had mentioned on how to check your CPU temperature earlier in THIS ARTICLE . Incase that didnt work for you , you can try the following method . It is very essential to know and monitor your CPU temperature on a regular basis , especially if you have a power machine with graphic cards etc. So here's how you do it in ubuntu :
Step 1 : Go to the Terminal(Applications->Accessories->Terminal) and type sudo apt-get install lm-sensors . This will install the required package
Step 2 : Now back in the terminal type sudo sensors-detect
Step 3 : Now enter YES to all the questions asked
Step 4 : Now to check your computer's temperature type sensors in the terminal
Step 5 : Thats it , you should now see your CPU temperature and the critical level which is about 85 degree celsius.
Now you can do one more thing , you can view your CPU and hard disk temperatures as an Applet like the screenshot shown below
For this,do the following
Step 1 : Go to the Terminal(Applications->Accessories->Terminal) and type sudo apt-get install sensors-applet . This will install the required package
Step 2 : Now you may need to restart ubuntu for you to see the applet to add it
Step 3 : After you have restarted , right click on the top GNOME panel and click on Add to Panel
Step 4 : Now look for Hardware Sensors Monitor and click on ADD
Step 5 : Thats it , you should now see the temperatures in your top Gnome Panel
