One thing which is most common among all windows machines is that they tend to slow down after a couple of months . There are many reasons for this including us installing a lot of junk software and allowing them all to run at startup . So here are a few things you could do once in a few months whenever you feel your windows system is slowing down :
1)CCLEANER
Go to THIS LINK and install CCLEANER and run the software . This software would basically remove all the unwanted files like cookies, temporary internet files etc therefore cleaning your pc of useless files.
2)ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
Go to Control Panel->Remove a Program option and remove all the unwanted programs/softwares you've instaled . Its common for all of us to have a LOT of unwanted softwares installed in our machines . Some we probably have used just once , some we probably havent used at all . Dont hesitate in removing programs cause you can always install them later on.
TIP : DO try avoiding as many third party softwares as possible . For example : Try using windows media player for music or just VLC as it plays everything , instead of installing winamp , real player, quicktime etc . Avoid installing digital camera softwares like zoombrowser etc when you can use the inbuilt software in windows to transfer your photos etc.
3)MSCONFIG
Go to Start->Run and type msconfig and then under Startup , uncheck all the unwanted softwares which you dont want to load at startup , remember unchecking these softwares does not remove them , it just prevents it from launching at startup , you can always launch the application manually later on . Having yahoo messenger , quicktime , winamp, google talk etc opened at startup is not quite necessary and will only use up your CPU and RAM. HERE IS a more detailed guide on this.
4)ANTIVIRUS/ANTISPYWARE
Install and update your antivirus and antispyware , I recommend AVG as it is FREE and comes with an antispyware also . SO update AVG and perform a FULL SYSTEM SCAN
5)FREE UP HARD DRIVE SPACE
Here , you could remove all the unwanted data you have on your hard drives . Im sure there are a lot of files which you wouldn't require after a certain period and there is no point in having it on your pc . So try removing them as often as possible so that you dont end up spending a day removing unwanted files when you are out of hard drive space
TIP : Do try organizing your files into directories like all your music in one folder , all your work data in one folder etc.
