Really sad news for pidgin fans , the popular chat client pidgin which supports multiple protocols will not be present in the next ubuntu release which is ubuntu 9.10 :
Empathy would be the replacement for pidgin , empathy was available long ago but was never installed by default in ubuntu . So now , for some reason empathy would be installed by default in ubuntu and pidgin will no longer be present . Although yes it could be installed separately . Empathy too supports all major protocols just like pidgin but it lacks a lot of addons which pidgin had , so i guess a lot of work has to be put into empathy for it to be as rich as pidgin in terms of features . Although empathy does support voice chat with google talk which is a good news for those who use their Gmail account for voice chat .
Well people at the ubuntuforums have mixed expressions . Some are pretty upset with the decision of removing ubuntu , but some dont really care if its pidgin or empathy as long as they can chat :) .
