One of the most awaited feature in pidgin has finally arrived . The latest Pidgin now supports video and voice chat for google chat users only . Basically it supports video and voice chat for XMPP protocol of which google talk is a part of . Although this feature is currently only for linux users , windows users would have to wait for some more time . Those with the latest ubuntu 9.04 would not have the latest pidgin , they would still be with pidgin 2.5.5 . The next version of ubuntu would not have pidgin , so if you want the latest version of pidgin in your current ubuntu setup , you would need to get it installed manually. So here's how you do it :
Step 1 : Go to The Terminal(Applications->Accessories->Terminal) and type sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com \ 67265eb522bdd6b1c69e66ed7fb8bee0a1f196a8 and enter your sudo password
Step 2 : Then again type echo deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-developers/ppa/ubuntu \ `lsb_release --short --codename` main | \
sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pidgin-ppa.list
Step 3 : Now Go to System->Administration->Update Manager and click on CHECK FOR UPDATES
Step 4 : Now install the new updates available.
Step 5 : Thats it , close and open pidgin and you should have video and voice chat working :) . The voice chat option , is under Conversation->Media ( on the chat window of your buddy )
PS : I have issues with video chat currently , it may work for you though . But voice chat works flawlessly :)
