Dropbox started LAN Sync a while back and i was really excited about this feature when they announced it . Dropbox as you all know is a file and folder syncing software which syncs your files among multiple machines which can be located anywhere and must be connected to the internet. So here is more on LAN sync :

For some LAN sync may not make a difference , well that depends on what you use dropbox for . The advantage of LAN sync is that if one machine on your network has a particular file , then the other computers on your network linked to the same dropbox account will not get the file synced from the dropbox servers whereas from the computer which has the file originally , this is done via LAN thus not only improving sync speeds as LAN speeds are faster than internet speeds but also saving on internet bandwidth .
This is useful if say you keep a backup of a particular file or a bunch of files on another machine on the same network . Now backing up becomes easy and fast as its done via LAN and even better , its done automatically . So here is a small image i took of LAN sync in action . If you notice there is (LAN ) written in brackets with the file transfer speed . This speed is way faster than the typical internet speed . I'm really glad that this feature is finally in place!
