This is a small how-to on settings up a DHCP server in your modem or router.. A DHCP server basically assigns ips to all pcs, laptops, xbox etc connected to it.This makes it easier to setup your network rather than manually typing ips on all boxes.
This howto contains information on enabling DHCP server on four different routers, incase your router is not mentioned you can still follow the instructions , they're pretty much the same on all routers. So here goes..

1)DHCP SERVER on HUAWEI SMARTAX MT880 OR 800 OR 841

Step 1:Login to the router by going to http://192.168.1.1 , enter admin as username and password
Step 2:You will see a page similar to this

Step 3:Now Click on the DHCP tab , you will find it under HOME->DHCP
Step 4:Then click on the Enable button as shown in the screenshot and specify the DHCP range.

Step 5:You can specify the DHCP range based on the number of pcs that are going to be connected to it.Let the starting range remain as 192.168.1.2 now suppose you have 3 pcs , then let the ending range be 192.168.1.4 therefore the three pcs connected to it will get ips 192.168.1.2,192.168.1.3 and 192.168.1.4 .. you could make it to 192.168.1.5 or 192.168.1.6 so that incase you want to temporarily connect a pc to the network you need not change your network settings.

Step 6:Click on the Apply button and save/reboot your router

2)DHCP SERVER on UT300R2U

Step 1:Login to the router by going to http://192.168.1.1 , enter admin as username and password

Step 6:Click on the Apply button and save/reboot your router

3)DHCP SERVER on DLINK DI-524 OR DI-624

Step 6:Click on the Apply button(the tick button) and save/reboot your router

This completes the DHCP setup on your router. You may now need to change settings in your Operating System.Again i'll show you how to do it in Windows and Linux

1)Configuring DHCP network Settings In Windows

Step 1: Go to Start->Control Panel->Network Connections (in vista go to network and sharing center and click on manage network connections)

Step 6: Another Windows would pop up, Now click on "Obtain IP addres Automatically" as shown in the screenshot

Step 7: Click on OK and close other windows and you should have got an ip from your router.

2)Configuring DHCP network Settings in Linux(Ubuntu)

Step 1: Go to System->Administration ->Network and enter the password
Step 2: You should see a page similar to this.Choose the network card which is connected to the router. In most cases it would be the first one.in my case it is Wired Connection(eth1).

Step 3: Select the correct network card and click on properties button
