How to Remote Control a Ubuntu Machine From Windows via LAN

This tutorial will help you in setting up remote desktop in ubuntu so that it can be access from windows

Settings in the Ubuntu Machine

Step 1 : Go to System->Preferences->Remote Desktop
Step 2 : You should see a window similar to this
Step 3 : Ensure that "Allow other users to view your desktop" and "Allow other users to control your desktop" is CHECKED .Also it is advised to set a password, So ensure that "Require the user to enter this password" is CHECKED and enter a suitable password as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 4 :Then close the window
Step 5 : Note down your ubuntu machine's ip address.To find out the ip address. go to the terminal(Applications->Accessories->Terminal) and type ifconfig . Your output should be similar to this

In this case 192.168.1.10 is the ip address of the ubuntu machine, note your pc's ip address accordingly..

Settings in the Windows Machine
Step 1 : Download VncViewer From HERE
Step 2 : Extract the ZIP file to a directory and open vncviewer.exe

Step 3 : Now enter ubuntu's ip address(in this example it is 192.168.1.10) in the VNC server field as shown in the screenshot and click on the CONNECT button

Step 4 : Another window should pop up asking for the password, leave the username field blank and enter the password you entered in your ubuntu machine(In Step 3) and click on the OK button

Step 5 : You should now have your ubuntu screen on your windows machine!!!
