A majority of people in India use BSNL broadband . For a lot of reasons , primarily because they are the cheapest in terms of cost . One of BSNL's most popular offers which has been available since many years is the night unlimited feature . Which means you can download and upload as much as you want between 2am and 8am. Although yes this is applicable only with certain plans. Now many of us use this night unlimited feature for our downloads as it wouldn't count in the monthly usage . A lot of people ask me (and i've also noticed this at various forums) why they dont get the full 2mbps speeds during the night . They say they've configured everything correctly on their side port forwarding etc . But they still dont get sufficient speeds. Well there could be a reason for this :

BSNL seems to be doing something really smart at night . What they do is place all their broadband customers onto one server during the night unlimited time . This was something that a person had observed at a forum long back . I'm not able to find out which thread that exactly was . But anyways, from what he said and from what i checked out , i noticed that this is indeed true . I used to get connected to the same gateway every night between 2 and 8 am . But for the rest of the day i would be connected to various other gateway servers . But not the same gateway server always during the day . So during the day i would get connected to a random gateway server . But at night i was getting connected to this 1 gateway server always . And surprisingly not only me , but a lot of other people too was getting connected to the same gateway at night . Here's a screenshot i have of the gateway that i am connected to.

Now if everybody gets connected to this 1 gateway , then its surely going to use up all the gateway's bandwidth , who knows how many people are getting connected to this 1 gateway and sharing its bandwidth . So one of the possible reasons why you could be getting low download speeds during night time even after you've tried all those tweaks like port forwarding etc is because you are connected to an overloaded gateway server.

SOME TESTS I PERFORMED :

I performed a few speed tests to show you the difference . My speeds during the night are horribly slow . Let the screenshots do the talking

DURING NIGHT UNLIMITED

1)TEST 1

2)TEST 2

DURING NORMAL HOURS

SO i guess its pretty clear that speeds during the night are horribly slow and its definetly BSNL who is capping them . As my setup is the same during normal hours and during night unlimited.

The first 2 screenshots are not during night unlimited and are showing slower speed than the third screenshot which has more speed and taken during the night unlimited period.

Thats GMT my friend.. I am in the IST timezone :)

IST = GMT+5 1/2 HRS

So , for the 1st screenshot
9:26PM GMT +5 1/2 hrs = 2:56AM IST ( which is during NIGHT UNLIMITED)
2nd screenshot - is 6 minutes later

3rd screenshot - 5:58AM GMT +5 1/2 HRS = 11:28am IST ( which is during normal hours )
