Connecting your wired ISP router to a wireless router has become a typical setup now a days in most homes. Now a days almost everybody has a laptop or a wifi enabled mobile phone and everybody needs a wireless network at home.So this tutorial should help you setup your isp provided wired router with a seperate wireless router you purchased. Now this isp , could be any ADSL ISP like bsnl, mtnl, airtel etc. And wireless routers could be linksys, netgear, dlink etc . So even if you have another router, the basic idea can be taken from here.THere are plenty of ways to configure two routers together, this is just one of the methods.Special thanks to Dinakar who has been actively involved in creating this tutorial and providing the screenshots. So here's how you do it :

Configuring the UT300R2U - The ISP provided wired router

As i said earlier, there are various ways to configure two routers together. In this setup, we shall configure the UT300R2U in PPoE mode.

Step 1 : Connect a LAN cable from the LAN port of the modem To the LAN port of your computer. Forget about the wireless router for the time being. So for this FOLLOW THIS TUTORIAL to configure PPoE mode in UT300R2U .
Step 2 : Now FOLLOW THIS TUTORIAL to ensure that DHCP server is enabled . Set the DHCP range from 192.168.1.3 to 192.168.1.20 ( this is more than enough for approximately 15 pcs ) . If you have more than 15 pcs then set the dhcp range from 192.168.1.3 to 192.168.1.50

Configuring the Linksys WRT54G - The wireless router you have

Now this wirless router will behave like a wireless hub in this setup. The modem ( UT300R2U ) does the dialing work and the gives the ip addresses as DHCP is by default switched on in UT300R2U.So follow these steps in order

Step 1 : Now You need to change the wiring.Remove the LAN cable from modem to the pc.Now Connect a LAN cable from the LAN port of the wireless router ( Linksys WRT54G ) to the LAN port of your computer. NOTE : In a typical 4 port wireless router, you would find 1 INTERNET port and 4 LAN ports. If you carefully observe you would see the INTERNET port a bit seperate from the LAN ports.

Step 2 : Now connect one LAN cable from the LAN port of the wireless router ( Linksys WRT54G ) to the LAN port of your computer.
Step 3 : Now Open a web browser window on the connected computer and type http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar and press enter. A window will pop up prompting you for a username and password to access the configuration page for your router. Enter admin for both the username and password.

Step 4 : You should see the Setup page shown below.
Step 5 : Now Change the internet connection type to "Automatic Configuration - DHCP"

Step 6 : Also Change the Local Ip address From 192.168.1.1 to Say 192.168.1.100 , because UT300R2U has the ip 192.168.1.1 and there shouldnt be an ipconflict
Step 7 : Also ensure that you DISABLE DHCP SERVER in the same Page , as DHCP server is already enabled by default in UT300R2U , so you dont need to have DHCP server enabled for both UT300R2U and Linksys .
Step 8 :(Optional) On this screen you may change the Router Name from its default value to something unique. Also, you may set the time zone. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save Settings then click Continue when the Settings are successful dialog is displayed.
Step 9 : Next, click on the Wireless tab at the top of the settings screen. Change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) from the default value to something unique (you can use the same name you set as your Router Name in the previous step). Also ensure that Wireless SSID Broadcast is ENABLED so that you can find your wifi network easily. Click Save Settings and then Continue when the Settings are successful dialog is displayed.

Step 10 : Next click on the sub-tab ‘Wireless Security’ and Change the Default Security mode to WPA and enter a good strong key ( its like a password to access your wifi network). Then Click on Save Settings

FINAL CONNECTIONS

Step 1 : Now You need to change the wiring again.Remove the LAN cable from router to the pc.Now Connect a LAN cable from the LAN port of the modem ( UT300R2U ) to the 1st LAN port(NOT INTERNET PORT) of the wireless router ( Linksys WRT54G ). NOTE : In a typical 4 port wireless router, you would find 1 INTERNET port and 4 LAN ports. If you carefully observe you would see the INTERNET port a bit seperate from the LAN ports.
Step 2 : Connect all other pcs to the other LAN ports of your wifi router if required.

You have now configured Both your wired router ( UT300R2U ) And Your Wifi Router ( Linksys WRT54G ) Successfully. Now Ensure that all settings are saved and reboot both the routers and wait for a few seconds for the linksys to connect and you should have access to the internet.

It worked like charm but I dont get the logic behind connecting the dsl modem ethernet port to routers ethernet port.

I did the same thing by mistake a couple of days ago and it was working but I thaught,hmm......, something is wrong with my router.

Thanks anyway....

Hi bilal,
The reason is because in this type of setup the ISP modem is being used as the main router which is doing the pppoe procedure whereas the wifi router is just behaving like a wifi hub . Connection to the internet port is only required if the wifi router is in pppoe mode . There are different methods to set it up. This is just one way.
Glad it helped!!

Hi prash, Can you describe the other method wherein the lan connection of MT882 goes into internet port of WRT54G router and the router acts as a proper "Router". I am just curious and want to try that out. Thanks again for all these tips.

ok here's a brief summary of the connection you are talking about sanjeev,

1)connect from LAN port of modem to WAN port of wifi router
2)disable DHCP in modem and keep modem in bridged mode
3)enable PPPoE in wifi router and enable DHCP as well..
THats about it..

Is this possible to use only the wifi router...no UT300R2U?

Prash Babu said... @ June 26, 2009 at 12:46 AM

well , this depends on which wifi router you have.. if your wifi router has the an rj11 port ( the port used to connect a telephone line ) then yes it would work

I successfully changed my ut-300r2 modem to ppoe mode and i don't need to login now....thanks for that.
But I can't access the config. page of my wireless router i.e.DI524up...also I can't use the wi-fi to connect to the net now which I could easily when the modem was not in ppoe mode.......what could be the problem.
p.s. I need to change the modem to ppoe mode so that I can use wifi on my cellphone.
thanks in advance ....waiting for reply.

mayank said... @ July 13, 2009 at 12:58 PM

Firstly , have you switched on wireless? is your windows machine able to detect the wifi router? next , are you able to access http://192.168.1.1 when connected wirelessly?

Job Abraham said... @ July 30, 2009 at 3:40 PM

Prashant,
1. Yes, I have switched on the Wireless button on my vaio (the button is in the front and indicator for the button is glowing as well).
Note: Under Vaio Smart Network - there are four things:
a) WLAN
b) LAN
c) Bluetooth
d) Modem
When the ethernet is connected WLAN, LAN & Bluetooth is ON and not the Modem. (then i am able to access internet)
And when I connect wireless, then only WLAN & Bluetooth is On and LAN & Modem is switched off. (then i am unable to access internet)

2. Under "Select a network to connect to"....I can see two network and i see following comments in front it:-
a) Reenajob (The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirement of the network)
b) Linksys (Security-enabled network)
Note: "Reenajob" is my SSID for which i cannot see any signal strength and "Linksys" I don't what is this, but there is signal for Linksys and it is very week.

3. I am not able to access http://192.168.1.1 when connected wireless.

Note: My laptop connected wireless once when the technican installed the Broadband and after which i was never able to connect it wireless. I call up the customer service and they will run me with the regular setup on http://192.168.1.1 but it never worked.

Hope my comments are elaborate and help you to understand the problem.

Pl. help

Prash Babu said... @ July 31, 2009 at 5:52 AM

under the network and internet center in control panel , look for Manage wireless networks and remove the Reenjob network there.. and then try connecting again.. is this a secure network? WEP or WPA?

Job Abraham said... @ August 1, 2009 at 4:23 AM

Prash,

I did remove Reenajob (SSID) from the 'Manage wireless networks'.

Still it is not working..

This is WEP.

Prash Babu said... @ August 4, 2009 at 1:51 AM

Are you far away from the Reenajob network? why does it show no signal strength? try removing the WEP temporarily and see if you get connected..

Job Abraham said... @ August 5, 2009 at 12:02 AM

Prashant,
Thanks it is working now, as i tried changed the SSID and the key.

I have also see a strange thing, when ever i switch on my system it will show not connected. So in when i diagnose the problem it asks for checking connection setting. When i put my key once again in the connection setting......it gets connected again wirelessly.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Prash,
This is awesome info that you have put here. Though it took lot of trials to do this setting for my netgear router, finally it did work. Many thanks for this page.

Below is how I set up my Netgear WGR614v6 wireless router with MTNL’s Sterlite 300 modem.

Connect LAN cable from modem to 1st LAN port of router. (Not internet port of router)
Connect LAN cable from lan2 port of router to your pc.
Keep everything off.
Factory reset the router by starting it and pressing hard reset button on the back for 10 sec or so. Wait for green test LED to go off.
Go to 192.168.1.1 from a browser. It will open the router welcome page.
Go to http://www.routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm
Go to wireless settings. Give some name to the wireless network. Choose security and passphrase for Security Encryption (WPA-PSK). Apply the settings.
Go to LAN IP Setup. Disable the DHCP server. Apply the settings. (I did not change the IP that you have specified about in your steps. If I do that, I used to lose connection with the router and was never able to reach this setup pages using the new IP that I set. So I skipped that and still it worked)
Start the modem. Let it stabilize.
Go to router basic settings in the browser. Click test. This will update the basic settings and then only the router's wireless LED will glow. Till that time it will remain off. This is very important. Even if you do not change anything in this page, you must hit test and apply buttons. If still the wireless LED is not glowing green, there is some problem in the setting.
Also it will ask for login this time. It will not ask for it in earlier stages. (At least it didn’t for me)
Now the settings are done. You should see your wireless network in network connections of your PC. Remove the LAN cable from your PC. Select your wireless network, enter passphrase and you should be connected.
